August caption contest results

What a turn of events! The contest entrants were placed in the winter cap (except for Krouchdog, because he won last month) and a winner was drawn. In a surprising twist, the winner, Spacebeer, declined her victory since she won a few months ago. Round Two began, and a new winner was drawn. This month's winner of a Dr. Mystery deluxe homemade compact-disc-technology-style compact disc compilation is Rustle.Destroyer! Congratulations on your random victory, Rustle.Destroyer. Please enter next month, everyone, and don't stop believing!

Wow I won big on Dr. Mystery's Can-Smashing Robot Caption Contest, and you can too.

Curses! Oh, well. If at first (and second) you don't succeed, and all that ...

Also, I have to say that when I read my captions in the context of the others I feel that I should give a disclaimer. So here I am, disclaiming.

I realize that my mention of a tablecloth in July's contest may come across as having to do with the size of the girl wearing said tablecloth. I would have written the same thing had she been the size of a toothpick. A toothpick in a tablecloth. Anyway, there are few things that make me cringe more than "fat girl" jokes, since I used to be (and may once again become), shall we say, "girthier" than I currently am.

Also, is "Mexican Standoff" derogatory? It occurs to me that it might be considered a slur, rather than just a colloquialism. I never heard it used in a nasty way, but who knows? I didn't intend it as such. Nor did I intend to disparage the stereotypical mild demeanor of white midwesterners of scandinavian descent. Although excessively happy people who consume lutefisk do kind of freak me out.

I take no offense at the phrase "Mexican standoff." I imagine that particular standoff was invented in Mexico, hence the name. Since, historically, Mexico has been inhabited/visited by many cultures, the inventors of the standoff may have been French, Spanish, Texan, Aztec, or a family of Wisconsin tourists. The term probably does not disparage the Mexican people. In my view, "Chinese firedrill" is a more loaded term than "Mexican standoff." However, Mike Watt has a song called "Chinese Firedrill," sung by Frank Black. I defer to them and their mostly good judgment, and so I say Mexican standoff it is!
